Rotating Machines Workshop

Electrical Testing of Generators and Motors for Condition Assessment

Live Virtual Event
October 21 - 22, 2025
10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Central Time (CT)

This two-day, virtual technical workshop is designed for professionals responsible for the testing, maintenance, or reliable operation of medium- and high-voltage generators and motors. The topics discussed in the workshop are applicable to AC machines rated 4 kV and above. The session will include an overview of stator insulation systems and how they are manufactured. It will also emphasize the role of electrical testing in evaluating the insulation and other critical components of the machines to support long-term machine reliability. These include partial discharge (PD), power factor, dielectric frequency response, insulation resistance, polarization index, and others. Additionally, guidance will be provided on specifying electrical testing requirements for new machines, repairs, overhauls, and rewinds to ensure quality and reliability. The session will conclude with practical case studies highlighting the practical impact of diagnostic testing.

Attendees will gain a clear understanding of the value of incorporating different diagnostic tests into routine maintenance or commissioning practices and what it takes to execute testing and analyze the data.

This event is an excellent opportunity to gain your NETA Continuing Technical Development Credits (CTDs).

Topics Include:

  • Rotating machine fundamentals relevant to testing and common failure modes
  • Introduction to the manufacturing process of stator winding insulation
  • Description and purpose of electrical diagnostic tests
  • A high-level overview of test procedures with a live demonstration of a PD measurement on a stator bar
  • Interpretation of test data to assess the stator winding condition
  • Specifications of electrical testing and commissioning for large rotating machines
  • Case studies on motors and generators rated 4 kV and above
