Tutorial on IEC 61850

Thursday, November 5, 2020 | 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Plan to attend our tutorial on IEC 61850 and digital substations presented by Dr. Alex Apostolov and Eugenio Carvalheira.

This tutorial discusses the benefits of digital substations, introduces the basic concepts of IEC 61850 and gives practical examples of its different applications for the Protection, Automation, and Control (PAC) of electric power systems. The first part of the tutorial covers the requirements for virtualization based on the principles of object modeling and functional decomposition. The second part focuses on the different services defined by the standard and how they are used for the design and implementation of PAC systems, including the SCADA, station bus and process bus interfaces in the substation. The third part of the tutorial describes the System Configuration Language and its applications for the engineering of substation PAC systems. The last part covers the testing aspects of digital substations from the early project design phase through commissioning and subsequent supervision of the PAC system.

Mission Statement

To provide a regional forum where professionals from industry, academia, utilities, government, and manufacturing share and exchange knowledge on systems responsible for the generation, transmission, and distribution of electric power. The sharing of information at this conference will help attendees and their organizations become more competitive, efficient, and successful in their efforts. The conference will provide many networking opportunities to facilitate collaboration amongst attendees creating a special and unique electric power community.
