Pre-Conference Tutorial on IEC 61850

Plan to attend our half-day pre-conference tutorial on IEC 61850 and digital substations presented by Dr. Alex Apostolov, Dr. Fred Steinhauser, and Eugenio Carvalheira.

This tutorial discusses the benefits of digital substations, introduces the basic concepts of IEC 61850 and gives practical examples of its different applications for the Protection, Automation, and Control (PAC) of electric power systems. The first part of the tutorial covers the requirements for virtualization based on the principles of object modeling and functional decomposition. The second part focuses on the different services defined by the standard and how they are used for the design and implementation of PAC systems, including the SCADA, station bus and process bus interfaces in the substation. The third part of the tutorial describes the System Configuration Language and its applications for the engineering of substation PAC systems. The last part covers the testing aspects of digital substations from the early project design phase through commissioning and subsequent supervision of the PAC system.

Earn Continuing Education (CEUs) and PDHs.
